Stormy Landscape by bridgepix

While his career would serve as a testimony to his toughness, for Brian Pillman, the fight was on from day one. Born Brian William Pillman in Norwood, Ohio on May 22, 1962, Pillman had throat cancer at birth, his trademark raspy voice the result of over three dozen operations to remove it. Football was Pillman's early passion, and his zeal showed, as he would set records for tackles for losses during four years playing for Miami University of Ohio, before signing as an undrafted free agent with his hometown Cincinnati Bengals in 1984. Pillman would see pre-season action with the Buffalo Bills the following season, but would be the final player cut from the roster. From there it would on to Calgary and a season with the Stampeders of the CFL before ending his football career. It was during his quest to break into pro football that Pillman would first wind up on steroids and painkillers, starting substance problems for the rest of his life.

It was while in Calgary that Pillman would enter the world of professional wrestling, training at the legendary Stu Hart dungeon in Calgary, debuting in November 1986 with Hart's Stampede Wrestling promotion. It is also notable during his time in Calgary that Pillman would use his girlfriend at the time, future Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) manager Beulah McGillicutty, to get himself over with the fans, as they would often have heels taunt her, bringing him to her aid. By the end of the following year, teaming with Bruce Hart as Bad Company, Pillman would win two International Tag Team titles, enjoying championship success through the summer of 1988.

In 1989, Brian Pillman arrived in the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA). Now known as “Flyin'” Brian Pillman, his speed and high-flying attack would lead him to the NWA United States Tag Team Championship, teaming with Tom Zenk to defeat Michael Hayes and “Gorgeous” Jimmy Garvin in February 1990. The duo would drop the titles after a three month run to the Midnight Express (Bobby Eaton and Stan Lane). While Pillman would go on to other successes over the next couple of years, including two WCW Light-Heavyweight titles, he would also have his share of adversity during the year, losing a retirement match to Barry Windham, at which point he would return as a masked persona, the Yellow Dog, stalking Windham before eventually being reinstated. Pillman would defeat Richard Morton in an October 1991 tournament final to become the inaugural WCW Light-Heavyweight Champion. After losing the belt to Jushin Liger on Christmas Night 1991, he would win it back from Liger at Superbrawl II in February 1992, going on to an acclaimed match at Beach Blast in June 1992 with Scotty Flamingo, in which Flamingo would manage to take the title from Pillman. The WCW Light-Heavyweight title would short-lived, however, and would soon fade away.

In 1992, putting aside his solo career for the time being, Pillman would take his first steps to superstardom, as he would team with another up and coming star, “Stunning” Steve Austin, to form the Hollywood Blondes, a heel tag team that would feud with Ric Flair and Arn Anderson, and Ricky Steamboat and Shane Douglas, with whom they would have several highly regarded matches, including a WCW World Tag Team title victory for the Hollywood Blondes on March 2, 1993. They would hold onto the belts for five months, when Austin, teaming with Steven Regal (a substitution for an injured Pillman) dropped the belts to the Four Horsemen's Arn Anderson and Paul Roma. The Hollywood Blondes would go their seperate ways not long afterwards, although Pillman and Austin cross paths again sooner than imagined. For Pillman, however, it would also mark the final championship of his brief career.

The next few months would see Pillman drift through WCW, feuding with Brad Armstrong, Eddie Guerrero, Marcus Bagwell, and Alex Wright, as well appearing in a six-man tag team match in the Thunderdome cage at Superbrawl IV, as the team of Sting, Dustin Rhodes, and Brian Pillman defeated Rick Rude, Paul Orndorff, and Steve Austin. As autumn 1995 approached, Pillman would snag another piece of wrestling trivia, as he would wrestle WCW's first shot of the Monday Night Wars, defeating longtime rival Jushin Liger in the opening match of the premiere episode. Later on in September 1995, Pillman's career had arrived, as he would being teaming with Arn Anderson, joining the reformed Four Horsemen the following month at Fall Brawl '95.

While Pillman would gain a notorious reputation for unpredictability through actions like calling out Kevin Sullivan as the booker on air during the Superbrawl VI pay-per-view, and perhaps most infamously, an incident during a Clash of the Champions in which he grabbed commentator Bobby Heenan, causing him to inadvertently bark “what the f*** are you doing?” on live air, he stint with the Horsemen was mostly unmemorable, as they mostly played on tension between Pillman and Anderson.

In early 1996, Eric Bischoff would grant Pillman his release from World Championship Wrestling, and “The Loose Cannon” would make his way to Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) the second he was free. It was originally done as a way to expand Pillman's character for a future return, although Eric Bischoff would write in his 2006 autobiography, Controversy Creates Cash, that no one “will ever know who was working who.” Pillman's short stay in ECW would be memorable not only for his outrageous behavior and promos to build heat for his new persona, but for the simple fact he never wrestled a match for the promotion.

Cyberslam, ECW's annual internet fan convention, would provide the backdrop for Brian Pillman's infamous first appearance on February 17, 1996. During an in-ring interview with Joey Styles, Pillman would call former boss Eric Bischoff a “gofer” and a “piece of shit,” among other things, before threatening to relieve himself in the middle of the ring as Styles attempted to end the interview. ECW owner Tod Gordon and Shane Douglas would then have Pillman escorted from the ring by security, during which he would attack a planted fan with a fork hidden in his boot. Pillman would only make a few more appearances with ECW, mostly arguing back and forth with Shane Douglas.

On April 15, 1996, while driving in Kentucky, Pillman would suffer serious injuries, including a shattered ankle, after falling asleep behind the wheel of the H1 Hummer he was driving and flipping the vehicle. In a coma for a week, Pillman would have the ankle fused into a fixed position, forcing him to use a more mat-based game plan, rather than the speedy, high-flying attack that had defined his career. In addition, the injuries only served to worsen Pillman's dependence on painkillers. June 10, 1996 would see Pillman sign a contract with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), performing announcing duties as his ankle healed.

Returning to the ring following his attack of a plant on an episode of WWF Shotgun Saturday Night, Pillman would return to his Stampede Wrestling heritage, joining forces with Bret and Owen Hart, Jim Neidhart, and Davey Boy Smith as the new Hart Foundation and embarking on a legendary feud with former partner Steve Austin, known now as “Stone Cold,” who would “injure” Pillman's ankle by placing it in a chair and then stomping on it. Some refer its subsequent use as the “Pillmanizer.” This would lead to one of professional wrestling most controversial televised moments.

As the feud between Austin and Pillman raged, Austin decided to visit the already injured Pillman, presumably to finish the job. This would take place on the November 4, 1996 episode of Monday Night RAW. As interviewer Kevin Kelly and camera crew sat inside the Pillman home, a flock of Pillman's friends surrounded the house. When Austin arrived, he predictably handled Pillman's friends and broke into the house, where he would find Pillman training a Glock 9mm on him! The camera feed would then cut out, as Melanie (Brian's wife) and Kelly shouted for help. The camera feed would be restored near the end of the broadcast, as Pillman's friends dragged Austin out of the house, Pillman in pursuit with the gun, proclaiming his was going to “kill that son of a bitch!” During the spot, Pillman accidentally let loose with an F-bomb (on a live TV feed), triggering later apologies from both the World Wrestling Federation and Pillman himself for the entire angle.

Over the course of the next year, Pillman would align himself with the Hart Foundation once again, going on to a bizarre feud with Goldust (Dustin Runnels) and his manager Marlena (Terri Runnels). Interestingly enough, while the manager/wrestler duo were married in real life at the time of the angle, Pillman and Terri Runnels had dated while they had both worked for WCW. As the storyline unfolded, Pillman would suffer the humiliation of having to wear one of Marlena's gold dresses on RAW the night after losing a match to Goldust at Summerslam '97, but would gain revenge at Ground Zero, winning the services of Marlena for 30 days, during which time he dressed her in degrading manners and implied that he had slept with her.

Sometime in the hours leading up to the October 5, 1997 Badd Blood pay-per-view in St. Louis, Missouri, Brian Pillman passed away in a Minnesota hotel room at the age of 35. While Pillman's past drug abuses were well-known, an autopsy showed a previously undetected heart condition – arteriosclerotic heart disease, had in fact led to his death. Survived by wife Melanie and three children: Brian Jr, and daughters Brittany and Danielle from previous relationships, Pillman died just before he was to find out they had another child on the way.

Posthumously, Brian Pillman was first honored by the Brian Pillman Memorial Show, a multi-promotional event featuring WWF, WCW, and ECW wrestlers, in addition to local and indy talent, which ran four years, from 1998-2001. Over the course of the four shows, many additional pro wrestling memories were created, such as Dean Malenko's retirement announcement at the inaugural event, and a sensational Chris Benoit/Steven Regal match (at the 2000 show) that would result in Regal being offered a WWF contract. In 2003, Pro Wrestling Illustrated (PWI) would rank Pillman #84 of the 500 best “PWI Years” singles wrestlers, and one-half of the #50-ranked tag team (The Hollywood Blondes, with Steve Austin).

Frosty Hampshire landscape by photontrappist

Syracuse University is a private college located in Syracuse, New York. I attended hoping to graduate with a degree in Hospitality Management. Due to the high cost, tuition alone runs over $30,000 a year, I only attended for a short time before seeking a less expensive option. However, if you can afford it SU is a great college that offers a lot of opportunities for its students. With over 200 majors to choose from this school offers a diversity of opportunities both in and out of the classroom.

A good place to meet other incoming students is through the college orientation. Whether you are an incoming freshmen or a transfer student, SU, organizes a two to three day orientation for new students. Consider moving in a day or two early. This gives you a chance to get your room set up and meet others who have moved in early as well. This is great time to meet people because you are all on the same level playing field; your new, scared, and excited all at the same time.

Syracuse University offers over 300 student organizations. These organizations are a great way to meet people that have the same common interest as you. Another good place to meet fellow students is the classroom; after all you are together for an entire semester. Other popular places to meet students are the library, dorm living, parties, and through friends.

All incoming freshmen are required to have one of three dining plans. This adds to both the cost of room and board and to the possibility of you gaining the freshmen 15! There are many dining halls around campus and each offers a wide selection of food. However, the food for the most part is not that appetizing. The only good thing about the dining plan is when you have friends visit they can use a guest pass. It is a cheap way to feed everyone that is on a tight budget.

The saving grace when it comes to food is your SuperCard Food account which is a declining-balance card that is linked to your Syracuse I.D. Card. You can use this card at most vending machines, Kimmel Food Court, and a few off site locations (think along the lines of pizza). Kimmel Food Court which serves KFC, Burger King, Dunkin Donuts among other things is a popular place for many students; especially on weekends when it is open until 3am. On South campus, Goldstein Dining, offers many options; Dunkin Donuts, Burger King, and Sbarro to name a few. My off campus favorite was Dinosaur Bar-B-Q, but you would need a car to get there. It is a great place to grab wings and enjoy some live music.

Freshmen are not permitted to have a car on campus unless you obtain special permission. You need to petition for it and prove that there is a valid reason you need to have one (medical reason). The cost to park your car on campus can cost anywhere between $400 and $700 a year. Now the campus is big, at 200 acres, so sometimes it is hard to get around. Buses run frequently so do plan accordingly. The two worst things in my opinion about Syracuse University (with the exception of the cost) actually have nothing to do with the university itself.

The weather is a big con. It is windy, it is cold, and the snowflakes are not like the big beautiful ones you see in the movies. Slush, ice, and sleet make up the picture of winter in Syracuse. To top it off winter lasts for months. Some days it is so cold out that you do not even want to venture outside.

The second worse thing is the safety outside of campus. On campus there are a lot of procedures implemented to ensure your safety, but right out of your little zone is the city of Syracuse. Syracuse is not known for being the safest place. If you do venture out I would always do so with a group.

I really enjoyed Brewster and Boland dorms because they were newly renovated. The downside to them though is they are the furthest away from all the academic buildings. When choosing a dorm you have to decide what means more to you; close proximity to everything or a better lay out of the actual dorm room. Remember just because you put in for a certain dorm does not guarantee you will receive your request. Another thing I really liked about the dorms at Syracuse were that some of them offered a “split double.” This is where you share a room with a roommate but unlike in traditional rooms there is a half wall that divides the room into two halves. You have the best of both worlds; you get to share with a roommate and you still have your own privacy. Another thing that I found quite surprising about the dorm situation here was the guy-girl rooming. Most colleges have separate wings or floors for those of the opposite sex, but here at Syracuse University you will see that co-ed by alternating rooms is common. One room will be female and the next male.

Even if you are not into sports you need to know who Otto is. Otto the Orange is the mascot at SU. Athletics is a big part of the culture on campus. The Carrier Dome, that sits right on the edge of campus, is where a lot of the sporting events are held. The men's basketball team in 2003 won the National Championship title.

Here are a few other things that you should know about Syracuse University. Your student ID card is not only good for identification purposes and for food purchasing. Many freshmen take classes in lecture halls. You use your card to swipe in because of the vast amount of students. Therefore, if you want to be counted as there for attendance purposes, make sure you have your card with you. Another thing is you can have a Supercard Plus account balance on your card. This allows you to use your ID card to do laundry, use the campus copy centers, and purchase student discounted tickets at the Carrier Dome. IDs are also needed to gain access to many of the dorms at night. Residential Security, RSAs, sit at the entrance to every dorm on campus from 8pm until 8am checking IDs for security purposes.

When the weather is actually nice, hurry and get outside. “The Quad” is an area of grass located in the middle of the SU campus. Here you will find many students hanging out enjoying the nice weather. Bring a blanket and book, bring a ball for catch, or bring a Frisbee for some fun. The Syracuse Campus has a lot to offer, but if you feel like you need to get away for the day that can be easily accommodated. Marshall Street (also known as M-Street to many students), is located right next to campus. Here you can go and escape campus life for awhile. There are lots of good places to eat, shop, and at night the street comes alive with local bars. If you wanted to venture a little further away from campus take a bus over to Carousel Center to catch a movie or do some shopping. If you wanted to get away for the evening than head to Turning Stone Casino. Turning Stone is about 30 minutes away and offers food, gambling, and that much needed break from school work.

Up to now the Gamepark 32 and the Sony PSP have pretty much been the standards for portable emulation. The former costs $200 and is frequently out of stock at import stores, however, and the latter costs even more than $200 and requires some hardware modding in a lot of cases. Not only that, at the very least, you have to install emulator software from the internet, and a lot of newcomers find it to be more hassle and confusion than is worthwhile.

Not to say that's not as it should be, since you would assume part of the reason emulation never really gets cracked down on all that hard is that it is kind of inaccessible to all but the most determined (and at least halfway intelligent.) You can see where there's a huge market for a portable, plug and play, “out of the box” emulation hardware, however. The “Pocket Retro Game Emulator” (PRGE), manufactured by some company that apparently wants to make it very hard for you to find out who they are or how to contact them, is being sold through ThinkGeek and several other major online stores, and is attempting to fill that market demand for easy portable emulation.

The specs it hits you with are fairly impressive for a $99 package. It claims to emulate all NES, Super NES, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, Sega Genesis and Neo Geo games. All of the emulation is handled by software built into the unit and there's no installing to be done on your part, you simply drag and drop ROM files from the computer to the unit via a USB connection. The unit also advertises the ability to play movie and audio files, read e-books, display JPEGs, record voice and even has a built in FM tuner. Internal storage is 4 GB and you can expand that via a mini SD card slot. The screen is 2.8 inches, video out to a TV is possible if you bring the cables, and the internal battery claims six to eight hours of play on a full charge.

Sounds pretty impressive, huh? Let's put it to the test and see how well it performs at all these duties.

A good starting point is this video from ThinkGeek. You'll notice that every game they show seems to run smoothly on it, this is because they are trying to sell it to you, so they cherry-picked games that are known to run well. Still, despite the smoke and mirrors here, the emulation on the PRGE works more often than it doesn't. The highlights are the Gameboy, Gameboy Advance and NES emulation. These run just about anything you throw at them either at full speed or so close as to not be noticeable, and the sound emulation is near perfect as well. The SNES, unfortunately, struggles a lot more. Even one of the games that ThinkGeek shows off, Super Mario World, is running slightly slower and with a small amount of dropped frames, and with missing sound effects and instrument samples that are slightly off. That's still one of the better ones of the bunch, and it is still playable despite the problems. However, the larger and more complex an SNES game, the more likely it is to have slowdown or dropped frames, or simply not run at all. Most of the games that utilize a special hardware chip, such as the two Starfox games, either don't run at all or run very poorly. Sega Genesis emulation is overall better, with most games running and at full or near-full speed, and with sound that mostly seems to be on point.

Neo Geo games can also be run, and though it doesn't seem to be advertised anywhere, so can a limited range of Capcom CPS1 games. The Capcom games in question are arcade games from around the late 1980s to mid 1990s. If you remember the old emulator Callus by Bloodlust Software, the list of games that this system can run is more or less identical to the ones that ran under Callus. In both cases, the games have a fairly high compatibility rate and are playable, but there is very noticeable slowdown and skipping of frames. It still comes out on the playable side but is a little irritating.

It turns out that the PRGE is actually a slightly modified version of the Dingoo A320, a handheld system released not long ago in China (where copyright and intellectual property laws range from very lax to totally nonexistent.) As such, the technical specs indicate that the system should be capable of emulating everything it advertises. So it's likely just an issue with the firmware's emulation, which could potentially be fixed by new firmware releases in the future (or by enterprising hackers making their own versions.)

The system itself is like a slightly larger NES controller with a screen inserted in the middle. The NES controller was passable, but not the most comfy to play on, and this thing gets the same ratings. It has the same basic setup as an SNES, with four face buttons, start, select, and two (very small) shoulder mounted buttons, so the number of buttons is adequate for everything that it emulates, but an extra mappable button or two would have been nice.

I expected the non-emulation features to be cheap throwaways but they are actually fairly robust. The overall menu system is pretty much lifted from the design of the PSP and PS3, but it was a pretty good one to pirate. The radio component actually seeks stations and stores lists of them in memory, and the antenna is actually built into the unit, both of which surprised me. As far as MP3 play goes, you are able to search by titles and ID3 tags, and the system reads tags and sorts by Album and Artist, there's even an on-the-fly selectable Favorites list. It's no iPod but it does get all the basic features right. Video play is actually better than everything up to the iPhone. The unit seems to play any encoding of MPEG or Real Video. If you select full screen playback you might get a hiccup or dropped frame here and there but it's surprisingly fluid and powerful for such a cheap system. It offers “Flash Play” of .SWF files as well, indicating you might be able to get Flash games like Dino Run running as well.

For what is basically a cheap pirate system from China, I was actually left fairly impressed by this thing. On the whole, the emulation right now isn't as letter perfect as you can get on the PC, but for most of the consoles it's pretty close. Super NES emulation is still imperfect for all portables at this point, even the more powerful PSP, though this unit as-is is markedly worse at it than the PSP or even the Gamepark are. While there's no promises, it is quite possible that the firmware could be upgraded and fixed to take care of the present emulation issues, and possibly add even more consoles to the mix. It also makes for quite a passable little portable music/video/radio player. At the $99 price point I expect there will be a lot of interest and thus a lot of hacking and upgrade. If you've got the free cash and the interest I would seriously consider picking one up before lawsuits start flying and they become a lot harder to get ahold of outside of China.

I would give you half
For you are a better protector
Than I

All the men and scoundrels
That have walked against my path
I was always tempted to say Hi

Thou you may seem high and mighty
Your as gentle as a lamb
Your radiant smile would bring joy to all the land

So I deem you protector
For your will and strength
Your gratitude and sincerity
Is what keeps my heart awake

In the deadliest Hour
Where sins may convene
Our love for each other
May do more then conceive…”

Yo Dawg, We Put a Race Car Game on Yo Race Car

As part of our neverending mission to tell you what video game is now turning left four times at 100 mph on Saturday tonight, let's check in with Joey Logano and the No. 20 GameStop Toyota.

GameStop, which has a 21-race sponsorship deal with the NASCAR driver in the lower-run Nationwide Series, put Split/Second on Logano's hood for something called the Bubba Burger 250 tomorrow tonight (dangit) at Richmond International Raceway. Split/Second is actually something Logano has played.

“You have to use real racing skills like drafting, just like you do on the track most weekends,” Logano said, “but then you also have to think about planning a strategy to wreck the other cars and the courses so you can win.” Just like you do on the track most weekends, amirite?

Logano opened the series with a seventh place finish at Daytona (that's not the 500, btw), with BioShock 2 on his hood, then took the pole but finished fifth with Mario Kart Wiion the lid. Tomorrow's race is 7:45 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2, if that's your thing. Whoops, this sucker ran tonight. Too late. Brad Keselowski won. Joey finished 6th. Goshdangit!

Send an email to the author of this post at owen@kotaku.com.

He plays uptight Park Avenue resident Pete Campbell on 'Mad Men,' but actor Vincent Kartheiser is decidedly less materialistic than his alter ego.

In an interview with the UK Observer, Kartheiser, who resides in LA, says he no longer has a car (he takes the bus or walks) and lives in a home with no toilet.

He claims to use his neighbor's.

“I don't have a toilet at the moment. My house is just a wooden box. I mean I am planning to get a toilet at some point. But for now I have to go to the neighbours. I threw it all out.”

(As he says this, I'm wondering whether this is just another of the parts Kartheiser might be trying on for size, but to prove the point he later takes me back to his house, which really is an empty wooden box, a small one-room bungalow on a nondescript Hollywood street and indeed it has no lavatory.) Is that a Buddhist thing, I wonder, or an early midlife crisis thing?

“It started a couple of years ago,” he says. “It was in response to going to these Golden Globe type events and they just give you stuff. You don't want it. You don't use it. And then Mad Men started to become a success on a popular level and people started sending me stuff, just boxes of shit. Gifts for every holiday, clothes. One day, I looked around and thought 'I don't want this stuff, I didn't ask for it'. So I started giving it to friends or charity stores, or if it is still in its box I might sell it for a hundred bucks. I liked it so I didn't stop.”

But he admits he does own a bed.

Fortunately, with Season 4 of 'Mad Men' about to film (it starts airing in July), he will have somewhere to use a toilet for the next several months.

Bobby malus

Hello !
